Houston Intercontinental Airport - KLM Crown Lounge Experience

Here's a comprehensive review of the lounge experiences at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), one of the busiest airports in Texas and a major hub for United Airlines and international carriers.
🔍 Quick Facts

Terminal: Terminal D

Time of Day: Afternoon
🎯 First Impressions
It’s best to arrive early, as the lounge fills up quickly—especially after 2pm. There’s a daily KLM flight, and once that’s approaching, the lounge becomes restricted to KLM passengers only. We were asked to leave at 4pm so they could make room for those passengers. The lounge itself is quite small, and the food selection is very limited.

👍 What I Actually Liked
The Space & Design
Instead of choosing the seats closest to the food and drinks, we decided to walk past that area to another section. It's more quiet and the seats are comfortable as there are chaise chairs.

The quieter section includes workstations for guests who prefer a more private place to work

Totally Unacceptable Food Options
The food is pathetic at best as they serve sandwiches not fit for a kid or cafeteria school. I've seen better sandwiches in a packed lunch. The sandwich had pimento cheese on wheat bread. There's also kettle chips and chocolate chip cookies hidden across from the food area near a television. I passed on the chicken noodle soup although it looked much better than the sandwiches. A cold pasta dish is available but don't expect much. It was probably the most edible out of the entire selection of food.
Food Quality Note: Unfortunately, the food quality at this lounge is disappointing. The offerings lack the international flair or Texas flavors you might expect, and everything tends to be quite bland and generic.
Beverage Selection
The KLM Crown Lounge offers the normal variety of beverage selections. The caveat is there's a bartender to serve you drinks regardless of alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. I ordered a margarita since I saw a pre-mixed margarita bottle. It was served with a green salted-rim and was nothing spectacular. My partner ordered two gin and tonics. There wasn't a line but once we left we saw a couple of people lined up for drinks.

🎯 Lounge Access Tips
Best Times to Visit
- Early Morning (6:00-8:00 AM): Quieter, fresh breakfast options
- Mid-Morning (10:00 AM-12:00 PM): Less crowded, good for work
- AVOID AT ALL COSTS: Late afternoon (4:00-6:00 PM) - The lounge is ALWAYS packed during this time when the KLM flight departs. Be prepared to wait for seating, and don't expect a relaxing experience during these peak hours.
🤔 The Reality Check
Who Should Actually Use This Lounge?
This lounge is good for most travelers from couples to small groups of less than four people.
Is It Worth Paying For?
Definitely do not pay for this lounge. If you want a real meal I HIGHLY suggest going to a restaurant in the area. There's no benefit in going here unless you want alcoholic drinks and a bit of relaxation.
AirFrance Lounge
If you're looking for a better experience, the AirFrance lounge is just a 5-minute walk away, though it's equally packed during the same peak times.
Pro Tip: Don't rely on Priority Pass or LoungeKey membership for this lounge - they often turn away members due to overcrowding, especially during the 4-6 PM peak period. If you have time, explore Terminal D's international shopping area, which features a variety of retail and dining options representing Houston's diverse international community - you might find better food options there than in the lounge.
